Staying in Ukraine - Day 1

I guess Brian wasn't very specific in his last blog post about our plans from here.

He left Ukraine today and will spend the night in Germany. He gets on the plane home tomorrow and should arrive back at Dulles around 3:00pm (VA time). Jamie and the kids will meet him at the airport. I hear the girls have a surprise for him! :)

I don't like airplane rides AT ALL - I usually get sick and cannot rest. Along with that, we'd have to pay to change my original flight, plus another entire round trip back and forth once Dennis is ready to go home. So, I've opt'd to just stay here in Ukraine. The hotel is pretty cheap and the food is way cheaper than in the US, both in the grocery store and in restaurants.

I'm at the Hotel Lugansk, about 30 min drive to the orphanage. Today being the biggest holiday of the year, we had a hard enough time getting a taxi to take Brian to the airport, so I decided not to push it and try to get over to see Dennis again today. Hopefully our regular driver will be available again starting tomorrow.

Anyway, today I didn't figure that most stores/restaurants would be open, so I didn't even leave the hotel. The sign on the door to the Chinese restaurant on the 7th floor says "no breaks or holidays" so I went there for dinner. We still had some food supplies from our last shopping trip to last me for breakfast and lunch today ... and breakfast tomorrow.

So, tomorrow I will need to make another run to the market and maybe exchange some more money at the bank. Otherwise, I'll just hang out watching bad TV in Russian, reading, being on facebook, etc. until time to go see Dennis.

Hope everyone had a good Jan 1st!

  1. Are there any other adopting parents near you? I would hate to be there totally alone. Sergei is okay to be around, but he always did other things while there were waiting periods during our adoption, like going home to be with his family. I certainly couldn't blame him.

  2. Sergey left after he did court with us on the 31st. He'd been away from his family since before we arrived here because the Rowell's were using his services also in Severdonesk. He won't come back until I need him to chase the paperwork ... but the Rowell's will need him to do the same in Sevro, so I'm not sure how that will be arranged between the two families. I'm good by myself ... Brian travels for work sometimes, so 10 days isn't the longest I've been without him. It's just that the TV is all in Russian, otherwise I'd have been totally fine today. Already watched the movies we brought and websites won't stream movies/TV from the US. Have to be in the mood to read adoption books ...

  3. I think I just paid more for internet than we spend on food for both of us in a day. I'm pretty sure the room service I just ordered could have fed us for 3 days.
