Court done!

It went quick... everyone wanted to get on with the holiday.  The judge asked us some questions... repeating the "sickness" topic probably 6 or more times.  Dennis had an enthusiastic YES that he wanted to come to America with us.

What was asked and approved by the judge:
1. To adopt this child
2. To change his name to Dennis Robert Macy
3. To change his birth certificate to show our names as his parents
4. To leave the date and place of birth unchanged

Right now we are back at the orphanage with Dennis.  Melissa was listening to the iPod with Dennis and now it's time to take him to lunch.  Snezhana was by for a while and then had to go to her teacher's b'day party.  Sounds like her mom is back in the picture as well as gma and aunt... for a little bit at least.

Today we'll stay for a little while longer and then I'll have to give my goodbyes.  Dennis for just a few weeks... no idea on Snezhana.

  1. Congratulations on a successful court day for Dennis! I woke up thinking about you all. Have a safe trip back, Brian.

  2. Thanks. Gave the goodbyes... Dennis is happy though he's still more reserved than in the past. Getting to tell him mommy is going to stay in Ukraine and bring him to me in America made that pretty happy.

Snezhana didn't really want to say goodbye... she disappeared for most of the last 20minutes and showed up at the end. I got a shoulder bump I think... Melissa barely a hug too... Melissa figures she's trying to protect herself from her feelings towards us. It will be interesting to see if/how anything changes with her when Dennis is gone and her friends get back from hosting.

  3. Oh, and I was pleased with the deputy director at the orphanage. She has been helpful getting the kids, letting us stay, and even getting Snezhana who we "technically" aren't supposed to see. During the court she very strongly supported the adoption of Dennis even knowing we (a friend actually) bought him a tri-cycle and his walking greatly improved while he was with us. The judge was pretty pleased by what she said.

  4. Congratulations Macy's! We are so happy for you. You'll never forget this date. Happy New Year! We will continue to pray for Znezhana and the softening of g'ma's heart.

  5. Congratulations to you and Dennis! I know your minds must be fried after all that you have been through but if parental rights have been terminated for all the siblings, you can adopt them up to the age of 21 as long as the I600A is applied for prior to their 18th birthday. I cannot even imagine how confused and overwhelmed "S" must be feeling. Trusthing all will work out for the best! Happy New Year!

  6. Congratulations! You needed at least one happy day:)

I would guess that Snezhana is trying to hide her feelings from you. I've probably told you, but we tried to adopt both of our daughters back in 2007. One said 'no' the first time. Her aunt came around promising to adopt her when she knew she had no rights. We hosted her again, then adopted her in 2009. (Independently using Sergei and another facilitator)

We would see T almost everytime we went to the orphanage. It was so hard. I wanted to just tell her, leave us alone. You said no. But of course, I didn't. I was just hurt.

    S'novim Go-duhm! (Happy New Year:)

  7. @Stefanie & June: Thanks for the encouragement. It really was a good day... I'm excited to get home tomorrow to be able to finish the preparations for Dennis to come home. I may even decide to paint the boys room but I can't commit to that pain yet :)

With S, we really aren't sure. This is just going to have to play out and we'll have to be patient & listen. We certainly don't see ourselves waiting 2yrs and I see us looking to adopt again in a 1yr (sshhh, don't tell Melissa). At the moment she won't answer/return phone calls or SMS and hasn't for nearly a week. So this week will be interesting as we stop giving her minutes for her phone.
